It Ain’t Easy Being a Landlord—But It Can Still Make Sense

Being a landlord is not passive income in the way it’s sometimes advertised. When rents are soft and costs keep climbing, owners may be dealing with non-payment of rent, Landlord and Tenant Board delays, maintenance, insurance, taxes, and rules that can feel difficult to navigate.

Even with those challenges, I still believe landlording can make sense for the right owner with the right plan. Long-term results depend on more than today’s rent. They also depend on financing, property quality, demand, operating costs, tenant selection, and whether the owner can hold through the inevitable ups and downs.

In this episode, I discuss the realities of owning rental property in Toronto, including RentSafeTO, snow removal, the limitations of single-condo investing, and why some owners may want to consider alternatives. I also explain the long-term case for holding and why the rent-versus-own question needs to be connected to a broader financial plan.
